How To Make A Homemade Bow & Arrow
0 comments Posted by How To Make Money with Your Website or Blog at 3:21 PMIt's easy to make your own archery kit, once you have the right equipment. For this you need: a 5-foot branch and a 1 or 2 foot branch for the arrow; hemp string; feathers; flint stone or metal; dead sticks of about 12 to 18 inches; feathers; cardboard; and a knife.
For the bow, choose a piece of dead wood, preferably bendable and at least an inch in diameter and 5 foot long. Cut two notches in the branch, about 1 1/2 inches from each end. The notches should go about halfway into the bow and must be on the side of the bow opposite from the branch's natural curve.
The smaller branches are for the arrows. Make these as straight as possible, sanding them if needed. Cut one notch at the end of the arrow, creating a nice hook. This is where the string will sit at the end of the arrow, so make a nice deep groove.
Next cut a piece of your hemp string about three fourths of the length of the bow. It must be smaller than the bow. Tie loops at each end of the string that are big enough to fit around the notch that you made in the last step. Take the loops that you just tied and put them around the notches on each end of the stick.
Now take the cardboard papers and cut them into elongated triangles. The legs (bottom) should be approximately 1.25 inches by 1-3/4 inches. Once you have about 6 of them cut out (for 2 arrows) glue them about .25 inches from the bottom of the arrow. Keep in mind you should keep them evenly spaced from each other. They should provide for balance, accuracy, and a nice spin when the arrow is released.

How to String a Recurve Bow
Stringing your bow is not difficult, and it is usually required to take the bow string off when storing the bow. To get it back on, follow the steps below.
Steps
- Check the bow for wear and make sure that the bow is safe for firing.
- Slip on the string on the lower tip and hold the opposite loop in your non-dominant hand.
- Hold the upper bow tip in your dominant hand.
- Lay the other tip on the outside of the opposite foot.
- Put your dominant leg through the bow and push the thigh against the bow, with the curve away from you.
- Push down on the bow to bend it enough to slip on the string.
- Gently release your pressure on the bow and allow the string to tension.
- Check the bow again for any wear that you could not see without tension.
Tips
- Be sure that the bow is safe to be strung and fired. Breakage will send splinters flying at high speed.
Warnings
- This technique may not work with all bows or recurves.
Things You'll Need
- Recurve Bow
- Bow String
- Some Leg and Arm Strength

Find The Right Bow For Bow Hunting
0 comments Posted by How To Make Money with Your Website or Blog at 10:12 PMFor the very best experiences when you bow hunt, you need to pay special attention to the weight of the arrows you wish to use as well as how stiff the shaft should be in order to work the best with the draw weight and the length of the arrows you are using. It isn't always a good idea to use the lightest and fastest arrows available because they can actually cause damage to your bow. Light arrows and heavy arrows generally absorb the same amount of energy from the bow but lighter arrows result in the bow vibrating much more, which can result in damage to it.
The Archery Manufacturer's Organization, known as AMO recommends the standard minimum weight for an arrow to be six grains for each pound of the bow's maximum draw weight. According to this calculation 360 grain arrows should be used with a 60 pound bow. Keep in mind that heavy hunting arrows weigh approximately 8 - 10 grains per pound. If you want more speed then use lighter arrows of only 5 grains per pound, but don't use anything lighter than that.
The stiffness of the shaft is very important because of the pull and release methods used when the arrows leave the bow. Finger release arrows offer oscillations that are called paradox that begin the moment the string leaves your fingers. This is why you have to bend the shaft of the arrow at precisely the right moment in order to get it to pass the bow without hitting the riser. To get the best flight for your arrows, the shafts have to be a good match for your bow and for your personal style of releasing them. Mechanical release bows contain less flex with most of it being up and down movements. This will allow you to be able to use a wider range of arrows with different shaft stiffness and still have it fly well.
For more info see http://www.deerelkhunting.com/locations/Hunting-Wyoming.html
Another important issue that you need to consider is point weight because it relates to the stiffness of the arrows, especially if you are using a bow where the arrow is released with your fingers. Make sure you determine the broad head weight you will need for what you are hunting before you buy any arrows. It is also a good idea to practice with field object that are going to be of a similar weight.
If you are going to hunt whitetail deer then chances are you will be shooting from approximately 20 yards away. Most medium weight arrows can handle this distance without any trouble. Remember that heavier arrows require you to be more accurate but the shot will be quieter as well as penetrate the animal deeper. Lightweight arrows are perfect for practicing, but they are best left unused unless you have excellent vision and normally hunt at a distance of 25 yards or more. Choosing the right arrows for bow hunting involves looking at your style, the type of bow you use, and trying out various types of arrows to find those that work best for you.

Archery has always been the source of curiosity. It has fascinated people since ages and people are still very much excited about it. There are innumerable archery suppliers all across the world. The archery supplies from them will take care of most of your needs; these archery supplies contain bows and arrows of different varieties. Depending on your preferences you can select bows and arrows. The range of products available is many and the prices are also affordable.
Bows and arrows are the main constituents of archery. Bows are of different types such as Longbow, shortbow, flatbow, recurve bow, crossbow and compound bow. Longbow as the name suggests is very long; the length of the bow is equal to the height of the user and in some cases even exceeds the height of the user. The limb of the Flatbow is wider and the cross-section is rectangular in shape.
Shortbow is shorter in length; it is light weight and has a short range. It was basically used for hunting purpose. In crossbow the limbs are mounted in a horizontal manner and not in a vertical manner. The compound bow is designed in such as manner that the archer is at ease while mounting the bow.
All these types of bows are available in the market. Although some of the bows have become outdated still some of the archery suppliers keep the product for the satisfaction of their customers.
Shaft, arrowheads, nock and fletching constitute an arrow. Aluminum alloy, carbon fiber, wood and fiberglass are used for the construction of the shaft. Depending on the usage the choice of the arrow will differ from person to person.
However while choosing the arrow one should be careful that it is not too flexible and also it is not brittle. The archery supplies take care of the most of the demand of the archery equipment. But if still you are not able to find the one then you can definitely place an order and the suppliers will try their level best to fulfill your demand.
At present arrows made of carbon alloys are popular and are being widely used by the archers. In fact arrows used in popular sports events like Olympic are made of carbon alloys.
The arrow will be able to hit the target only when it is shot at a proper angle; when the arrow is in the air it should be able to use the air pressure to reach the target. The arrowhead and fletching provides the requisite balance to the arrow.
The arrowhead of archery arrows needs to be made of some hard materials like metals. The arrowheads heads plays a pivotal role in shooting the target. Fletching provides balance to the arrows; it is generally made of plastic or bird feathers. Fletching is at the rear end of the arrow and it helps in the projectile motion of the arrow.
Today archery has become a sporting activity; some even use it for recreational purposes. If you are the one who is excited about archery then the archery supplies will take care of all your needs.

Archery is an ancient technique, with the main purpose was use during battles but is still popular today. There are many people who are fascinated by archery. Today archery is mostly confined to the sporting arenas but there was a time when it played a very vital role in the battlefield.
There are innumerable stories about great archers in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, India, Greece and Persia. These archers are revered even today.
Archery equipment consists of bows and arrows. Studies have shown that the bows were developed in either early Mesolithic age or late Paleolithic age. Earlier pines were used for making arrows but later different materials started to be used for the construction of the arrows. .
The archery equipment should be properly constructed and the material used should be of fine quality. If the bows are not proper then the archer will face difficulties in mounting the arrow. The arrows should be such that it is easily mountable on the bows. If the arrows are not properly mounted then the archer won’t be able to properly shoot the target.

Archery is a sport or practice of using a bow to shoot arrows. Throughout history archery was used for many purposes including hunting and combat. It now has mainly become a sport of precision. Some history on archery is that it was said to have begun around 15,000 years ago, but the earliest that proven evidence was reported on archery was between 8,000 and 9,000 years ago.
The bow is said to have originally come from the use of hunting animals, and then it became a very useful tool in combat and warfare. It became the dominant means of shooting projectiles after replacing the "atlatl".
Some of the histories of Archery include Classical, Medieval and Asian Archery. The Classical groups that used archery included the Greeks, Indians, and Chinese. They had great numbers of archers in their armies.
Archers were one of the most decisive tools in warfare. Some archers were known to ride horseback, where combining their range, speed and mobility proved to be one of the deadliest weapons of all warfare. The phrase "a parting shot" came from this type of riding and it meant that a rider turned in the saddle to shoot as he rode away from the enemy.
Medieval European archery is one of the more popular studied forms of archery and it is recognized that the archers in the warfare of Western Europe were the most vital tool in their armoury. What many don't know is that they were one of the lowest paid of all types of soldiers. Because bows and arrows were so inexpensive it was cheaper to arm a man with these than to arm a man with a sword and highly expensive protective armour. The bow, to them, was viewed as a "lower class weapon", and it was hardly used to actually decide any of their battles.
The Vikings were the most noted for using archers in their battles, and that is why they had so much widespread success throughout the 9th and 10th centuries. Archers from this era were often trained very hard from early stages of childhood. Usually the boys were given bows that were of their own height and tournaments were regularly held to help the boys practice their efficiency.
In parts of Asia, archery was also highly developed. It is noted that Central Asian tribesmen were the most skilled at archery on horseback. These "horse archers" would shoot while charging at their targets, then in one motion turn around in their saddles and shoot at the targets again while they rode away.
A deviation from the norm in Asian archery was a tool called the "Foot-Bow". These were often preferred because they could fire arrows a lot faster, and at a longer range than most conventional bows or crossbows. The technique to use a foot-bow was for the person to lie down on their back, with the bow at their feet, then they would put the arrow between their feet and pull the string on the bow back with both of their hands and use their back and legs to bend the bow. It was said that the aim was not very good, but with the combined weight and velocity of the five foot long arrows, that became less important.

Archery has been the part of human civilization since ages; in fact archery was extensively used in wars and for hunting. Ancient civilizations like Egyptian, Indian, Greek and Persian boasts of great archers. These archers are still remembered and revered.
Bows and arrows are the main constituents of archery. Studies have shown that the bows were developed in either early Mesolithic age or late Paleolithic age. Pines were used for making arrows.
Bows are an indispensable part of archery. It helps an archer in properly aiming at the target and shooting the arrow. If the bows are not proper then the archer will face difficulties in mounting the arrow. If the arrows are not properly mounted then the archer won’t be able to properly shoot the target.
The archery bows commonly used are: longbow, shortbow, flatbow, recurve bow, crossbow and compound bow. In crossbow the limbs are mounted in a horizontal manner and not in a vertical manner. The compound bow is designed in such as manner that the archer is at his ease while mounting the bow.
The arrow which is used along with the bow should also be made up of proper material and should be properly designed. The shaft used for making arrow should be of good material. The arrowhead which is at the front portion of the arrow directly points and hit the target. These arrowheads which are made of metals or some other materials are used to target points.
In order to properly shoot an arrow the archer has to maintain the correct stance. The posture of the body, the eye and the way the archer is holding the bow should be in line.
Sight shooting and instinctive shooting are the two methods adopted by an archer while shooting an arrow. In instinctive shooting the archer has to completely concentrate on the target while shooting the arrow. It requires a lot of practice.
Where as in case of sight shooting the archer can adjust the pins which are there on the bows to target an object, his is relatively easy. Previously instinctive shooting was the norm but at present sight shooting is more preferred.
The firearms displaced archery as it had many advantages over bows and arrows. They had long range, they were more lethal, using them did not require lots of training and no major skill was required to use this weapons.
Today archery has become a sporting activity; some even use it for recreational purposes. In sports too the archery bows used are different but there are set of guidelines provided by International Archery Federation regarding archery bows. Proper knowledge of archery bows and archery arrows will have those desirous of learning archery.

Archery like any sport has rules, most of the rules are best practice rules that are used to keep archers and spectators safe. In general it is good practice to observe these rules whether competing or just shooting for fun.
1. Aim
Always shoot arrows at the target. Arrows can be dangerous weapons and should never to be aimed at anything other than the target.
2. Inspect
Arrows must be carefully inspected before each shot to see that they have not been damaged. If the arrow shaft is damage it could cause the arrow to snap and injure the archer. A cracked arrow could also go off course and harm a spectator. The bottom line is damaged arrows are unpredictable and not safe to shoot.
Damaged nocks may result in arrow leaving bow unpredictably or result in a misdirected arrow. So always inspect arrows prior to shooting them.
3. Safety
Only when everyone has finished shooting should the signal be given, to move forward to collect the arrows. One person at a time should withdraw their arrows from the target. When withdrawing arrows from the target, make sure no-one is standing in front of the target or in the way of the withdrawn arrows.
4. Load
Never pull back and release a bow string without an arrow attached. This could damage the bow or injure the archer. Additionally, a bow should not be loaded with an arrow unless standing on the "Shooting Line" and the signal to start shooting has been given.
5. Placement
Targets should be set up to insure that no one can be accidentally hit by a stray arrow. All competitors must wait for the command to shoot and retrieve.
Archery is a fun sport, but one must not forget it can also be a dangerous sport. By following basic guidelines you are more apt to enjoy shooting.

Archery – The skill of shooting an Arrow using a Bow was in the bygone ages a military weapon and also a hunting method before the invention of gunpowder. It is mainly confined now as a competitive sport used for target shooting.
A bow is a weapon that shoots arrows using the elasticity of the bow. The bow is made of a strip of flexible material with a cord linking the two ends of the strip to provide tension from which is propelled the arrow which is a straight shaft with a sharp point on one end or have flints and usually with feathers attached to the other end.
The modern day 'Target Archery' involves shooting arrows at a target from a pre-set distance. A Recurve bow is the only type of bow allowed to be used. Archery competitions may be held indoors or outdoors. Indoor distances are 18 m and 25 m. Outdoor distances range from 30 m to 90m depending on the seniority and 70 m is being used in the Olympic Games.
Competition is divided into ends where an archer shoots either 3 or 6 arrows per end, depending on the type of round. There are 20 ends of 3 arrows in a round for indoor competition, but outdoor rounds generally involve more arrows per round. At the end, the competitors walk upto the target to score and retrieve their arrows.
Targets are painted with 10 evenly spaced concentric rings, which have score values from 1 through 10 assigned to them. Targets are colored as follows:
Outermost 1 ring & 2 ring - white
3 ring & 4 ring - black
5 ring & 6 ring - blue
7 ring & 8 ring - red
Innermost 9 rings & 10 ring - gold
There is an innermost ring, sometimes called the 10X ring or the Bull’s-eye.
The score for each arrow depends upon where it hits on the target. The highest score, a ten, is awarded by shooting an arrow into the two inner most circles. The bull’s-eye ring is typically as a tiebreaker with most X’s winning. Missing the rings on the target results in a zero score and in case of Line breaker where an arrow just touches a boundary line will be awarded the higher score. Scores are tallied at the end of each round or volley of arrows by summing the scores for their arrows which are recorded on a score sheet.
Archers have a set time limit in which to shoot their arrows. For indoor competition is 2 minutes for 3 arrows. Signaling devices such as lights and flags prompt the archers when it’s time to shoot.

Tips For Archery Fishing
0 comments Posted by How To Make Money with Your Website or Blog at 7:03 PMAlso known as Bow fishing, this is a sport wherein a fisherman uses archery equipment to fish.
A regular hunting bow can be used for fishing by simply attaching a reel to the front of the bow grip.
Archery fishing is especially favored by regular hunters when regular game like deer are off season. This way they can continuously hone their skills for whatever season it may be.
Before engaging in archery fishing, one must first take into consideration the following:
1. A fisherman must be duly licensed. Some states require that an individual have a state license to fish.
2. Equipment. Most states have a predetermined set of approved equipment for archery fishing.
3. Archery Safety Course. Still, some states require that an individual go through an approved safety course for archery fishing to ensure that the individual is well versed with the proper safety precautions and information regarding applicable laws in fishing.
4. Seasons. Bow fishing in some states can only be done in certain seasons. This is to allow the fish to spawn.
5. Species of fish. Some states have rules forbidding archery fishing for some species of fish.
The following skills are necessary for an individual to obtain and practice:
Knot tying. Though it may seem like a simple task, tying knots that will not slip (line for the arrow) are crucial in bow fishing.
Tuning. Tuning is making sure that the bow is at its best working condition. To ensure this, one has to continuously adjust the rest and calibrate the nock.
For a faster tuning process, one may shoot a regular bow-fishing arrow (without the tip) onto a target made of cardboard.
Marksmanship or targeting. Bow fishing and bow hunting, though similar on some aspects, really do differ on many things. Arrows for bow fishing are heavier, have larger arrow tips and, the most obvious one, has a string attached to the arrow.
And since fish are shot in the water, resistance differs as when compared to shooting in the air (for bow hunting of games)
There are various methods or ways of archery fishing. This includes the following:
1. Still hunting. A fisherman selects a place by the lake in which he would wait for passing fish to shoot its bow at.
2. Stalking. This can be done on foot or while on a boat. One is in constant motion in an attempt to locate fish.
3. Ambush. Fish that are best ambushed are the ones that are spawning since they tend to crowd thus increasing chances of target.

Similiarities of Golf and Archery
0 comments Posted by How To Make Money with Your Website or Blog at 2:10 PMGolf started a little more than 500 years ago. It may have gone back as far as the roman days. The golf ball was a leather pouch stuffed with feathers. Is it possible the kids back then started the game of golf by taking the feathers of their father’s arrows and stuffing their pouch, and used a club instead of a bow to get the curvilinear motion of a game they really wanted to play?
The Scottish Shepherds started playing golf back in Scotland, by hitting a leather ball stuffed with feathers. So many people played the game of golf in Scotland, that the government eventually stopped the game. The government wanted the people to practice archery, so they could be good enough to defend their country. Was stopping the game of golf altogether a mistake?
Judging by the enthusiasm of how golf is moving forward today. They might have been better off stopping the use of the mashie and niblick golf club, and made it mandatory to use the bow and arrow instead. It would have accomplished two things. The people would have improved their archery skills, and for the people who continued using golf clubs, it would have speeded up golf play at the same time. All they had to do to make it safe was lengthen the tee time intervals. The wind may have been the only other dangerous factor. The biggest problem would have been getting an audience or a crowd to watch along the sidelines.
Now taking a look at the similarities of golf and archery, one would think they went hand in hand. Both sports require a shaft, target, distance and accuracy. The two sports are played with a curvilinear motion. Players from both sports have to use a straight arm and a bent arm. The two sports have rounds to play. Both the arrow and golf ball are capable of going 400 yards or better in a single shot. The tournaments included junior tournaments.
Carrying either equipment is typically swung over the shoulder. The circle in a target is the approximate size in width as the tin cup. Equipment for both sports is made with grooves in them. The one difference between the two sports that stands out the most, one requires a nock and the other requires a niblick to play with?

Modern and Traditional Archery
0 comments Posted by How To Make Money with Your Website or Blog at 6:40 PMWith a history characterized by hunting and combat techniques, archery is the practice of using a piece of equipment called a bow to shoot arrows at a target. Throughout the years, it has become a sport of precision, leading to numerous competitions, as well as a spot in the Olympics. The title given to a person who is an expert in the practice is an archer. For some, archery is like an intense game of darts that involves more equipment, as well as increased physical skill.
Modern vs. Traditional Archery
The start of archery is thought to have emerged about 5,000 years ago. The first use of the bow was probably used for hunting, while its recognition as a tool for war came later. In ancient times, early man threw projectiles at their enemies. It is the bow that replaced this technique.
There are many different types of archery that has evolved from traditional archery. Classical archery was prominent among the Macedonians, Greeks, Persians and Indians, which often took up a large part of their armies. When directed effectively, masses of soldiers could be taken out with precision. Advanced armies took archery to horseback, allowing a swift execution of war plans.
In Medieval European times, archery was used in times of war, but was not as popular as you may think. On the contrary, archers received the lowest pay and were often looked down upon. Since it didn’t take much to fashion a bow and arrow, this contributed to the negative perceptions of the archers. It was viewed as a weapon for the lower class.
Asia and the Middle West used archers on horseback in their military force. In the Kingdom of Bhutan, archery is the national sport of the land. One of the differences in Asian arrows is they are less stiff than the arrows from the west. Today, competitive archery is popular, significantly straying from the traditional archery of the past. The use of archery as a form of warfare has been discarded and mostly only hobbyists hunt with a bow and arrow. Modern archery involves competition.
Competitive archery consists of shooting arrows for accuracy points from varying distances, quite popular in Europe and North America. Both indoor and outdoor venues hold archery competitions with different rules. For example, there are varying time limits. Indoor competition allows only 2 minutes to shoot 3 arrows. Archery equipment demands special attention to safety rules and use. You must receive proper instruction on how to hold a bow and shoot an arrow so that you do not hurt yourself or others.
Modern Archery Competitions
The color of the archery board for competition is white, black, blue, red and gold. There are two rings each per color with corresponding point values. The end score of a competition is computed by adding the total of all scores made by their arrows. If an arrow lands on the line between two different point values, the higher sum will be granted. Despite these rules, there are still disputes that call for the assistance of a judge.
There are many different types of bow shapes and sizes. During competition, the only type of bow that can be used in the Olympic games is called a re-curve bow. When you are ready to further your interest in archery, there are plenty of other details to take note of. For example, archers in competition often wear bracers that protect the arm. Tabs protect the drawing hand. Chest-guards protect clothing, as well as the body of the archer. All of these things, coupled with the archer’s stance, hand-eye coordination, release form and grip will all contribute to either the success or failure of an archery competition.
